Our Family Wedding Mexican Traditions

A new movie has been released to theater and is getting mixed reviews by attendees. It’s called Our Family Wedding. Have you seen this film?
The movie has great insight on different cultures and how easy they clash. Yes, there is some unnecessary language but for the most part they keep it upbeat. The movie is about a couple who returns from college and are engaged to be married. Neither of which has told the others family about such news. So the beginning starts off by introducing each other to their own families.

The biggest issue is that the groom is African American and the bride is Mexican. So you can imagine what it’s like to announce to the family about this news without any warning of race.

The movie gets interesting when the two families sit down and start to plan this wedding. One side of the family wants a Mexican wedding and the other side of the family wants more on an African American feel.

Both families fight to have their traditions included within the wedding. Really the two fathers are the ones that let their ego get the best of them. So not only is it about race but it’s also about the struggle that young couples have with their in-laws.

Such traditions that end up in the movie include using the lasso, having the father give away the bride, but the other father gives away the groom just to be better. They also include jumping over a broom after the groom has kissed the bride.

After the wedding there is a dance and the DJ has to go from one style of music to another. Eventually a full mariachi band shows up at the wedding and then the typical Mexican “gritos” start, this is when they give a certain shout of praise. Event the style of dance is different.

In all it’s a great movie to watch, look for the Mexican wedding traditions in the movie, it’s easy to read about them but much better to see them played out.
